XML/XSLT BBEdit Scripts 1.1

Version 1.1 of the XML/XSLT BBEdit Script collection "enhances XSLT code writing in BBEdit" in Mac OS 9 and OS X (the full version of BBEdit is required). These free scripts' source code is editable. Version 1.1 fixes "minor bugs with 10.2 AppleScript," introduces "history when running a script without selection," and adds "xsl:choose item."

MacSQL 2.5

This highly AppleScriptable software "allows users to view schema information and issue queries to SQL Databases" including "FrontBase, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and ODBC (Mac OS 9 only)." MacSQL can "export data as SQL commands, tab-delimited text, comma separated text, XML, or directly to Microsoft Excel," and it can run under "Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, or MacOS 9.x with CarbonLib 1.5 or greater."

oXygen 1.2.2

An updated version of this XML editing software is available. Along with various bug fixes, its XML Schema functionality offers better handling of "instance type definitions via xsi:type" and other improvements; its XSL transformations can include user-specified external parameters; and a header and footer can be appended to XSL transformation results.

Witango

According to its developer, "Witango is an XML execution engine which facilitates the creation and deployment of web applications quickly, economically, and with remarkable flexibility. Witango combines a graphical easy-to-use interface with an open, extensible architecture." Current version 4, available for Mac OS (and equivalent to pre-name-change product Tango 2000), "allows XML to be treated as a data type inside Witango for manipulation of structured data." "Witango application files are saved in an XML format, allowing advanced Witango developers to edit or create Witango application files outside of Witango." A beta of v5.0 is in the works for Mac OS X.

TCP-IP XT and Atomik Bundle

Easypress Technologies is bundling (until 14 October 2002) TCP-IP XT with Atomik 3.0 Developer Edition, which supports automated "conversion of QuarkXPress print content into XML." According to Easypress, "The free inclusion of TCP-IP XT will enable publishers to automate Atomik across the Web or from 'non-Mac' platforms as well as have Atomik become part of more complex automation processes in QuarkXPress."

Easypress 2.6

Also from Easypress, the new version of this content management system "features three additional modules" that support "personalised emailing, syndication and online subscriptions renewals. In addition, Easypress 2.6 has a significantly improved architecture for increased performance, robustness and scalability." The "Easypress syndication module, already adopted by Paragon Publishing in the UK, enables automated XML-based content syndication." Mac clients for the ASP-based Easypress system require only "Internet Explorer 5 or higher or Netscape Navigator 6 or higher."

ADC on Web Services for IE5/Mac

The Apple Developer Connection site has posted an article on developing server workarounds that enable Web Services to work with Internet Explorer 5 for Mac, despite the latter browser's inability to parse XML.

The developer of this XML-capable tool (built with REALbasic and supplied with REALbasic classes) for generating reports from a wide variety of data sources is offering a free upgrade to its professional version with purchase of the standard version before 1 October 2002.

XHTML 2.0 Public Draft

Not specifically Mac-related but of long-term relevance to developers using any platform, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) today released the first public Working Draft of XHTML 2.O. Several days ago, the W3C released the Second Edition of XHTML 1.0, which (while not a new version) adds corrections and comments to the XHTML 1.0 specification, and updated the note on best practices for using XHTML Media Types.

The Apple Developer Connection site has posted an extensive article on using the JavaScript programming interface to SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) in Mozilla 1.0.

FOEditor 1.0

This shareware application (for Mac OS X 10.1.4 or higher) from Scruffy Software can edit "Formatting Objects within XSL Transformations (XSLT) documents" to "transform an XML document into Formatting Objects (XSL)," which then can be "can then be transformed," saved, and previewed as PDF (Portable Document Format) documents; it also can transform XML and XSLT documents to XHTML. FOEditor comes with a pre-release version of iTunes Reports, which uses AppleScript and an XSLT file "to produce nice printable reports about your iTunes Library. The pre-release is limited to only a summary report."

Podpourri

Podpourri is a "Mac OS X Cocoa/Python application which lets you extract songs...from your iPod to your harddisk. You can use regular expressions for doing so and, hence, it is very easy to make MP3 CD-ROMs with your iPod's content. Podpourri also makes reports of such song lists in XML and PDF format." The developer's page has links for downloading the application as well as for viewing sample XML and PDF files (listed under "Projects" on the page found at the link above).

TestXSLT 2.3

According its developer's page, "TestXSLT is a small, AppleScript-able Cocoa application for experimenting with XSLT on Mac OS X. It uses the Sablotron and Gnome Libxslt XSLT processors, has lots of new features and a friendly user interface that makes playing around and learning XSLT fun. Some features which were added recently like interactive well-formedness checking while you type or a tag completion feature also make it useful as a general-purpose XML editor." It is available for downloading, and its source code is browsable online.
